During a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center last March, I was confronted with an environment of fear, uncertainty and discrimination which struck me as a troubling moral issue that also raises serious safety concerns. Read all about it here: www.thespacereview.com/article/5060/1

As part of the Peaks & Professors program, I hosted a group of USC students on a trip to Sequoia National Park last weekend. Huge trees, amazing views, great night sky, super fun students and pop-tarts for breakfast!!!

Very impressed last night by Abagail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill, candidates for Governor of #virginia & #newjersey who are focused on improving affordability in their states no matter what happens nationally. I’ve known Mikie Sherrill for >7 years and can’t think of a better leader for NJ.

We flew our airplane to Telluride CO to visit with my boon companion, Mike LA, and see an incredible film at the #telluridefilmfestival ‘From Earth to Michael’ is about a father-son relationship that spans years, spends time in space and endures per aspera. Hopefully you will get to see it soon!

Congratulations to all my friends at SpaceX on what I’d definitely classify as a successful test flight of #Starship today! Still a lot of work to do to improve the aft flap thermal protection but heading in the right direction again!

The only explanation I’ve heard that is remotely logical is that MAGA wants to weaken the power of scientists & intellectuals who might cast doubt on their “alternative facts” and promote objective truth. That is a common approach autocrats have used during past democratic government takeovers.

Finally, I am honestly baffled by the Trump Administration all-out assault on scientific research. Who is against research to cure Alzheimer’s Disease and pediatric cancer? What do you think is the driving reason behind this assault on American scientific greatness?

And as much as I love the ISS, it would be difficult for me to argue that the scientific return is superior to the JWST, Spirit, and Opportunity combined.

For perspective, the combined operating cost for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and both of the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers is about $200 million per year. The @ISS costs about $3 billion per year to operate.

These programs are things like telescopes, robotic missions to Venus & Mars, and Earth observation satellites. I’m a huge fan of human spaceflight, but I acknowledge that it's irresponsible to zero out so many valuable scientific missions which cost an order of magnitude less than human missions.

Second, the proposed budget for NASA targets the most cost-effective programs the Agency runs at least from a science per $ perspective. The $6 billion cut to NASA’s budget comes almost entirely out of science programs with > 40 science missions completely cancelled.

Unless these decisions are reversed, this will be remembered as a disastrous week for @NASA. First, I am not optimistic that whomever this administration nominates next for NASA Administrator will be nearly as qualified or enthusiastic about the agency’s mission as Jared.

Last night was joyful & poignant-the wedding of Noaa Ramon & Ron Eliav. I’ve known Noaa since she was 2. She is the daughter of the first Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, and the first of Ilan & Rona’s children to marry. For too long, this family has been getting smaller. But last night it got bigger.

Today my Ph.D. student, Ulubilge Ulusoy, graduates and participates in the age-old hooding ceremony tradition. I’m very proud of this smart, talented and promising young man and can’t wait to see what he does next!
