But I will swear by the following observations: There is not a single, gratuitous camera angle or shot in Desperate Living. Beneath the sleaze and the uniformly hysterical pitch of the acting, Waters is an austerely economical director who is figuratively comparable to Bresson. He is a driven, integral stylist. His troupe are beautiful ogres because they collaborate in absolute harmony with his ends, and are, therefore, not exploited. To paraphrase Rex Reed, Where else would these people go when the sun goes down? None of these comments come easy; they are hard begrudged because to extrapolate praiseworthy style from chillingly alien content is to skate on thin ice and to risk critical dandyism.

Washington Rep. Joshua Eilberg, D-Pa., said Saturday he is drafting legislation to ban the burial in national cemeteries of such "obviously unsavory individuals as George Lincoln Rockwell." He said in a statement he will offer the measure as an amendment to the National Cemetery Act when Congress returns from its Labor Day recess Sept. 11. Eilberg said his proposal would "close a loophole under which such obviously unsavory individuals as George Lincoln Rockwell could have been buried in a national cemetery recently."

INSIGNIFICANT ROCKWELL George Lincoln Rockwell was of no significance. He was an American Nazi, something that is difficult to understand. He had an exceedingly small number of followers, so few that his cause was hardly worth any attention. Yet his antics were widely known. He received three times as much publicity as the average senator, 10 times as much as the average congressman and twice as much as the vice president of the United States.

from an unattributed editorial in the st. petersburg times the day after rockwell's shooting:
A gun has silenced Rockwell. Earlier this week, New York police seized an arsenal and charged four persons with attempting the assassination of a Communist leader. In Miami, a smiling sniper took "target practice" on shoppers. There can be no certain protection from violence. But laws to restrict the availability of guns certainly would offer more protection than now. Advocates of even mild controls over interstate gun sales have not been able to obtain congressional action, even since the assassination of President Kennedy. It would be grimly ironic if the murder of Rockwell contributed to the passage of such vital legislation.
