I particularly headcannon qiu jianluo was both trying to steal his spiritual potential with many (fake, horrible) rituals and grooming him to become a cauldron, but I don't think that's what the author intended

I mean, he was a slave. I don't know what being a slave entails in fantasy ancient China but for the concept to have been translated to slave it has to be something truly awful... Being literally owned by another person means a lot of both physical and mental torment, even if they are seemingly good
