Huh. I guess I used magi to try and imply all humanoids but forgot that muggles don't fit under that. I'm pretty sure filch shows on the map so squibs do show. I guess at a certain point a soul could be different enough from a human that the map no longer picks up on it? so yes humanoid, no pets?

I chose to think it detects magi souls, not exactly bodies (so I guess it depends on how dead they are) - which both explains the ghosts and why animagi still count but animals don't.
