True. We’re racist because we’re raised in a racist society.

Antiracism is a practice, not a boundary that you get to choose a side & be finished with the work.

Try to improve, do your homework, be gentle, stay curious, & listen. Make new friends!

Of course, the wonderful magical thing about Odo, Chief of Security, was that once he knew himself more completely he could shapeshift into absolutely anything he dreamed up. “Be a chair, Odo” started as oppression until the freedom of his true being could transform into his superpower. Lucky Kira!

Spent a good portion of the day listening to David Greenberg’s biography of John Lewis, so also thinking hard about loving the oppressor. Being willing to suffer for justice but not for prejudice.

Now we have another project! Clearly I am not the first to go down this wormhole. What citations can y’all recommend?

Finally, another few searches in, I find the following:

Etymology
"Miskito" derives from the term Miskut uplikanan ("people of Miskut"). Miskut was a legendary Miskito patriarch or great leader. [citation needed]

Wikipedia confirms, the term mosquito derives from the Mosquito Coast, named for the [language named for the] Miskitu, which is rendered as Mosquito in Spanish. Indeed, several pages later, the term Miskito (in English) or Miskitu (in Miskitu) is the name of the language. Ok.

Curious, I search for the etymology of the word- to English from Spanish, I assume- but I don’t know if the term is a hispanization of Miskitu (the people) or if the term for the people is an exonym.

They provide such a neat and complete package, a mini ritual specialist flying around in misty places. 🦟

Lately, I have started to accept that mosquitoes serve today as the conveyance by which the tlaloqueh get fed their blood-sacrifice rather than expecting gringas like me to know how to open my tongue in order to soak paper streamers with blood to be burnt for the smoke to carry it up into the air.

Rather than falling asleep, instead I began to reminisce about all the wonderful places I’ve had the good fortune to spend time that sounded like this. Perhaps inevitably I began musing, of course, on the unseen ankle biters that send me scurrying away home again.
