This was the old County tractor I had at the time which I used for extraction. It had broken down on the main track on the woodland side of the gateway arch.

I’m having a few days off, it’s been a busy
old year so far!
Visited NT Sheringham Park today. A must for any tree enthusiast. A stunning display of autumn colours.

This was on the lane to the estate where I’m currently working, yesterday morning. It was gone by the evening but unsure who had the lovely job of cleaning it up.

Another moth recording on my coppice site today. This time a stunningly coloured Merveille du jour. Ideally camouflaged to look like lichen on the bark of an oak - host of its caterpillars. Thank you to Mark Nowers (RSPB) for the identification help.

2/2. The resulting compost will then be spread across the arable land of the estate which is now being farmed under regenerative guidelines. This is a new project for me to be involved in, so I will be interested to see the results over the coming years.

The harvesting methodology for my current coppice site is that the timber product is being cut on one side of the machine whilst all the brash is being stacked on the other.
The brash will then be extracted, chipped and allowed to break down in a heap. 1/2

After being told I was an uneducated forester and have little understanding of biodiversity loss yesterday, I thought it appropriate just to highlight this link again this morning. Communication is important, every interaction matters. m.youtube.com/watch?v=bwXE...

Right then Blue Sky folk, any idea on the ID here please. Photographed on my work site in Bedfordshire today. It was a considerable size, so much so that when I saw it in flight I thought it was a small bat. @stuttonsparrows.bsky.social
Note: identifying moths is definitely not my strong point!

I have carried out woodland management work on my current site for many years.
Below is a photograph of a coppice coupe I felled in 2016 and this is the regeneration after 9 years. Just shows what can be achieved if you keep the deer out.

We moved the machine to Bedfordshire on Monday to start a two hectare coppice operation. Very over stood and neglected stools desperately in need of some regenerative management. Firewood and wood chip material is being harvested for the Estate’s own system. #positiveforestry

The client deer fenced the site. The regrowth is excellent after only two growing seasons. In some places it was already head height. The landowner also supplemented the natural regeneration with some English oak to form future standard trees.

In November 2023 we carried a two hectare coppice operation in a SSSI woodland in Bedfordshire. I got the chance yesterday to revisit the woodland and see how it was progressing two years on. 1/2

It was an ideal time with the water being low. The estate manager was concerned that when the water level reached capacity over the winter the weed would prevent sufficient overflow. Keeping it clear will prevent the water breaching the dam and causing costly wash out. 2/2

The advantage of running an excavator based harvester is that we can often do extra jobs for a client whilst on site. This week I put the ditching bucket on to remove reed and silt from the sluice outlets on one of the estate lakes. 1/2

Royal Forestry Society - East Anglian meeting today at Sotterley Estate, Suffolk.
What a day! Superb quality oak stands illustrating that whatever you use your woods for, first and foremost, grow good quality timber!
Thank you to our hosts and what a tea!

One of the great things about social media is that people who you don’t know, have never met and know nothing about you, question your knowledge of a subject, character and general intelligence, simply based on the job you do. 🤷♂️

Today has not been a great day. In fact is been a pretty shocking week all an all. Two torrential thunder storms this afternoon did not lighten my mood!
