🚨 It's been a long time in the making, but I'm happy it's finally out!

Standing on the shoulders of giants, in this preprint we propose an avenue for theoretical development in the field of environmental (cyber)criminology with practical applications for crime analysis.

Drawing on multidisciplinary insights, we extend two established criminological models for studying offline offending—the geometry of crime and crime journeys—by adapting their core concepts to cyberspace and developing a topology in which the cyber place is defined and becomes the unit of analysis. Just as offenders travel before, during, and after committing crime offline, we argue they also undertake trips before, during, and after committing cybercrime, and that like offline journeys these cybercrime journeys comprise identifiable and measurable components. We further distinguish between human journeys (what offenders perceive) and data journeys (what happens to the information they transmit). We explicitly demonstrate how concepts from the geometry of crime and crime journeys translate from offline to online crime and mobility. This approach enables the systematic formulation of research questions and the measurement of behavioral patterns, facilitating the generation and accumulation of knowledge on cybercrime offending. The paper illustrates the framework’s theoretical relevance within environmental criminology and its practical application for cybercrime analysis through concrete examples. Researchers often perceive 'barriers' to practicing #OpenScience, whether it’s publishing open access, sharing data, or pre-registering studies.

Last week at @esc-eurocrim.bsky.social, I presented our work at NSCR identifying 36 such distinct barriers.

- Installation went smoothly.
- Uploaded a paper in PDF.
- Workflow was pretty straightforward (see pic).

On the train home after a guest lecture in Utrecht Uni. It was lovely catching up with @nivette.bsky.social and @isabellevdv.bsky.social. I even got a coffee cup made from recycled cups and a wipeable notebook. Cool stuff. And the students asked very good questions. What more could one ask for?

To our surprise, some searches even led to identify booter services that were still operational during the campaigns, providing useful information for law enforcement operations such as PowerOFF.
