On such a dreary autumn day, the air slouched more than usual in its perpetual fog over the puddle-and-stone-pocked hills. A touch of smoke lingered through the damp scent. My cheeks were wet with tears, but I stayed otherwise dry under the sturdy umbrellas held above me, prettily patterned in black and grey. Don’t believe their owners in their fine silk capes and delicate gloves pinned with gold rings would have offered me shelter except unintentionally. I was a prop after all, of no real consequence, and long accustomed to such treatment.
