Every year there's a horror that comes out that people give more shit than it deserves. Sinners was OK, folks. IMO the ending wasn't that bad, but I agree, the post credits stuff was a bit of a mixed signal and a bit goofy. 🤷 But whatever... It's streaming now, so... 🤷

Dave Allen can be credited for stop-animation.) For Dolls, Buechler and his team would draft an original design for the killer toys and fabricate each of the dolls featured in the film. To allow the dolls to be effective on camera, while fabricating he would insert internal mechanisms, such as wires, gears, etc., to allow the dolls to be manipulated. The internal wires and more allowed the dolls their baby-step movement as they massacred everyone silly enough to be killed by a toy. With these internal mechanisms, Buechler didn’t just allow dolls movement, he brought them to life! Buechler and his team would be responsible on set for animatronic use that would allow the dolls to move more elaborately in their pursuits, showing emphasis for what attacks were given with greater force. Not just to show us a lust for carnage and basic stabbing, swinging or walking motions, animatronics used by Buechler would also bring animation to the faces of the dolls. Not sure about you, but if I’m being killed by a doll, it’s 100/10 scarier if its little face is moving, really showing they’re putting the stank on – and ENJOYING – slicing and dicing me. Lastly, much like other SFX goats we’ve discussed, Buechler was tasked with creating the wounds, gore, and blood spatter on scene. This meant creating many prosthetics to show the slicing of skin, eyeballs being gouged, bites, etc. Watch the step-mom scene and you can see where stop-animation (Allen’s work) mix with the animatronics and SFX makeup from Buechler come together to create a vicious little ditty. It brings us a knife in the foot and back - props also created by Buechler, mind you - dolls sawing away and climbing up their prey, until she eventually opts to jump out a window for a quicker, less absurd death! Peep the chunk of flesh missing from her right hand! Buchler’s work! 🎥 ANOES 4: The Dream Master (1988) 🟠🟢🔵 http://tiny.cc/b34d001 Buechler’s work on ANOES 4 truly is the hamhock in a pot of beans, IYKWIM. Without him, what life could ol’ Freddy have in the film? Where would the scenes we know and love – even if you haven’t seen the film, you’ll know the scenes referred to because they’re infamous moments of horror/pop-culture – be without him? Well, bitch… Here 👏 we 👏 go! 👏 Freddy’s resurrection, pizza face, roach crush, soul chest, sand attack, and ALL the gore—Buechler nailed it. Though the nightmares created took plenty of time and effort as he would need to create the prosthetics, puppetry, and design the mechanics for the animatronics, much like he did for the previously discussed film, Dolls, no more than two years prior. The character count isn’t big enough to dive into detail about his work on ANOES 4, so we’ll focus on his direct contribution for just a few scenes, though if you’ve seen the movie recently, everything you saw was his work. (Wonderful, right? I’ve always thought it was one of the more fun ANOES films out there.) The prosthetics and practical applications for the flailing roach legs, the bursting skin effects with the prosthetic feelers that pop out, and the inevitable spine-crunching effect as the completely-bug Debbie, through its sticky-trap struggle, pops free through the flesh! Just like we did for ANOES 4, as the entire film’s graphic gross-outs are Buechler’s work, let’s dive closer into a specific scene for a more detailed look at how he brought the film to life. “Easy Prey” - YT: https://tinyurl.com/yjmyhs7n The design of the Pretorious monster, in all his fleshy-fuschia gooped out galore, was constructed by Buechler and his team, as was all extremity extensions. During the crafting process, Buechler would insert wires into flexible materials to allow the flesh-like appendages to be able in the mannerisms that made Pretorious even more disgusting to watch. This meant installing cables and small motors to allow the extension of the tongue, a prosthetic appliance to fit over Ted Sorel’s head, and doing a makeup job to blend the pieces to the actor's skin with the end-goal being one disgusting, what-in-the-fuck! The arm that would grab Dr. Katherine (Barbara Crampton) in this scene was puppetry created from a soft, pliable material that could be effortlessly dangled however the SFX team needed via the use of internal cables running through the arms to allow them raise it, lower it, strangle, grope – you get it – with an unseen (to us) support system that managed the appendage from below. Once the mechanics were tackled, the SFX team could apply a vigorous coat of paint and makeup to match the puppetry to the Pretorious monster! “Let it happen, Crawford. Let it out!” Once the pineal gland was crafted, the prosthetic would emerge from Crawford’s (Jeffrey Combs) forehead, controlled by wires to allow the gland to move around as he examines the room.

The text reads: "On December 28, 2017, a fatal swatting incident occurred in Wichita, Kansas, United States. During an online dispute between Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill regarding the video game Call of Duty: WWII, Viner threatened to have Gaskill swatted. Gaskill responded by giving him a false address for his residence, one that was occupied by an uninvolved person, Andrew Finch. Viner then asked Tyler Barriss, an anonymous online swatter, to make the required fraudulent call to initiate the swatting. Wichita Police responded to the address, and as Finch was exiting his house, police officer Justin Rapp fatally shot him. Finch was unarmed and shot within 7 seconds of him opening his door. His teenage niece and other family members were handcuffed and forced to step over Finch as he took his last breaths. His niece, 18 year old Adelina Finch later ended her own life due to the trauma and loss of her favorite uncle. Justin Rapp was promoted by WPD in 2022 to a detective position. He holds that position to this day."

🎥 Pet Sematary II (1992) 🟠🟢🔵 https://letterboxd.com/film/pet-sematary-ii/ Barton’s work on Pet Sematary II revolved mostly around Sheriff Gus Gilbert (Clancy Brown). To bring Gus to life (after death 😜), Barton created numerous prosthetics for Brown to wear. You might have seen the makeup and prosthetics in the movie during the scene after he's fresh from the grave, speaking with Clyde (Jared Rushton) in the school bathroom. The ghastly makeup and wound on the neck are direct works of David Barton, enhancing the “absolutely fucking not” vibe to Gus’s step-dad shenanies. It’s not solely the post-death, reanimated Gus that Barton created. When it comes to both of the Sheriff’s deaths in the film, Barton created multiple prosthetics to showcase the dog attack in process, as the skin begins to tear and blood pours from the wound. While not having anything to do with the blood squib detonation in the final death scene of Gus, Barton did collaborate with his SFX team to ensure that, much like they did for the death scene prior, wounds matched the manner of expiration. These wounds would show the bullet’s entry and exit points on Gus as well as the exposed flesh and damaged neck tissues. This film was my first introduction to Clancy Brown, a bit before I’d get obsessed with Spongebob in my elementary/early middle school years – not realizing until much later who voiced Krabs. 😅 My uncle having the VHS made this film accessible to me in my youth, but the reason behind all the rewatches was the vicarious enjoyment of seeing Gus eat shit as I was a child involved in domestic abuse. Before I even knew about horror films being cathartic for trauma survivors – much less old enough to understand the word “cathartic” – Pet Sematary II was a film I’d find that safety from my childhood worries and insecurities. It makes my heart happy to have the opportunity to share with anyone a little bit of info about Pet Sematary II, about Sheriff Gus and the man who gave him life. 🎥 Pet Sematary II (1992) 🟠🟢🔵 https://letterboxd.com/film/pet-sematary-ii/ Another shot of the neck injury created by David Barton for Clancy Brown as Sherriff Gus in Pet Sematary II (1992). 🎥 Species II (1998) 🟠🟢🔵 https://letterboxd.com/film/species-ii/ Barton and his SFX team would give to Species II the gift of cemented images. While I’ll admit, I’ve never seen the film in full, I walked in on this while my uncle was watching it – one of the many times he was charged with babysitting and decided “I’m having my day my way, child or not.” The same mentality that blessed me with my Evil Dead fixation. – and was immediately traumatized with the scene depicted above; Barton’s work. In the scene depicted above, a woman who had been impregnated by an alien was no longer needed as a host. For Barton’s team, this meant fabricating a whole-ass chestburster scene, undeniably a nod to Alien (1977), through the woman’s stomach. Barton labored (😜) over the bursting of the gut, the alien offspring’s head emerging from the woman’s corpse, and the alien appendage which knocks the man against the wall, covering his face. This wasn’t the only scene in the movie that would need such care, as there were plenty of transformation scenes, distended stomach prosthetics, and gruesome feats needed of Barton. As we had discussed what Montse Ribé did for Crimson Peak (2015), Barton also provided a foundation of practical FX for the alien’s final form, the self-delete scene, amongst other scenes where CGI can be seen. To do this, Barton and his team would create numerous prosthetics for misc. injuries, chunks left behind, limbs, heads, explosion wounds, and more while maintaining communication with the CGI crew for the best revolting, body-horror result. Lovecraft story so frightening. The fucking nightmare fuel of the mutated Ward monster attacking Lonnie (John Terry) is something body-horror fans will be just as in admiration of as the mutated head of Norris (Charles Hallahan) in John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). For The Resurrected, Barton’s contribution came in many forms. As mentioned, he was integral to creating the Charles Ward transformation from human to monster. To do this, Barton would create many prosthetic appliances to help bring realism to tearing skin, apply paint jobs to help sell the appliance of exposed muscles and add depth to warped facial features. The practical application for the Ward monster meant utilizing cable mechanics, animatronics, and the use of air bladders to simulate pulsating or distended body parts. His attention wasn’t solely on the Ward creature, but also on the other wounds in the movie. Any wound you see in The Resurrected was Barton and his crew’s work. Even, too, the scenes where body parts would be constructed together to create life once more in Ward’s pursuit to beat death, Barton created many prosthetic limbs, fake organs, torn tissues, buckets of blood, and helped create gore effects. No CGI here, folks! Barton and his team ensured every ounce of gore-splatter, eye-candy was as practical as practical could be, all for our viewing entertainment. Check it out!
