I am proud of so much of the work I did at ARTnews, until my very last day. I learned a lot. I also have not taken a real vacation in three years and have some serious health issues I am still dealing with. The last two weeks have been a big adjustment.

People are always surprised I cannot just go get a service job or let people know I am available to freelance. The terms of my TN visa meant I can't even get paid scholarship money to attend conferences or do class talks. I also cannot leave the country to grieve my layoff somewhere else.

I wrote detailed consignment and auction reports, artist profiles, business stories and features. I published more than 600 articles at ARTnews. I also presented at three NICAR conferences, which inspired me to produce many more quick investigations and do more data reporting this year.

The layoff is why I have posted a lot less recently, and why my byline stopped appearing two weeks ago, even with a lot of recent art crime news. It happened a few days before my third anniversary. Two other people were laid off.
