Arabic and its various dialects are often positioned as somehow being intrinsically anti-queer but the truth is that queer language exists wherever there are queer people, which is EVERYWHERE. Just got my copy of @marwankaabour.bsky.social's beautiful Queer Arab Glossary. Can't wait to dig in!

Today in my Language Awareness class we'll analyse the recent executive order making English the official language of the US, reading it alongside statements from prominent language-related associations. Will also turn our attention to Canadian language policy, too. Curious to see how this goes.

Just finished this book by Lara Hope Schwartz. Ostensibly written for US students starting college, I recommend it for anyone interested in the idea of civic dialogue. Full of useful tools and important questions!

The very best mix of emotions as I wrap up my time here @buwheelock.bsky.social. I've been so lucky to call this community home for the last few years and I'm incredibly sad to be leaving. At the same time, unbelievably excited to be taking up my new position @oiseuoft.bsky.social!

#BostonPublicLibrary is such an exciting space! Whenever I'm here, I am reminded of Zadie Smith's observation that public libraries are one of the last few places on the high street where one can spend time for free. These spaces provide so many vital public goods 😍

Hot off the press! My author's copy of Race, Racism, and Antiracism in Language Education, edited by Ryuko Kubota and Su Motha. Grateful to reprint and share more widely my chapter that explores both the challenge and promise of thinking at the intersection of race, sexual identity, and nationality!

Thanks to the BU LGBTQIA+ Center for inviting me to share my work as part of their Scholars Series! What does it take to breach the cisheteronormativity of the L2 classroom? I'm planning to rerecord for YouTube, but here's a link to the action ideas I shared: drive.google.com/file/d/1hb72...

I make it a habit to celebrate every small success and milestone in academia. Today my paper, "Inclusion and exclusion: A case study of an English class for LGBT learners," reached 100 citations 🥳 glad so many people have found it useful!

Valentine's Day and I'm treating myself to a nice solo dinner to celebrate our paper coming out 😅

Nerd alert! I asked teacher learners to self-assess their confidence in being able to demonstrate the competencies from our teaching rubric during their practicum. We're going to use this data to prioritise the competencies we work on in the practicum seminar 🤓

Students from my critical applied linguistics class organized a wonderful get-together to celebrate all the work we've done (two of them couldn't make it and were missed 😭) I'm grateful for everything they brought to the class--honesty, bravery, curiosity, kindness, hard work, and care. What a high!

Trying a coversheet checklist to help my students check their own work before submitting it and improve transparency around external tool use. Embedded in a template for APA 7th ed student papers that I'm giving them to take the fuss work out of the learning task.
