Glad to go to the #NoKings protest in Denver - didn't take any pictures, but I can see the Capitol from my hotel room window. It was heartening to spend time with the many, many others who recognize the gravity of our current political situation, especially given the unsettling news out of MN.

On Feb. 20, I'll be giving a talk in KU's Discussion Series on the Future of Democratic Governance discussing a decade's worth of research on political incivility and the implications for democracy during a second Trump presidency. The talk is hybrid, I'd love to see you in person or online!
Uncivil State of America: People, Politics, and the Press in an Era of Political Norm Violation. Ashley Muddiman, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, University of Kansas. The U.S. public consistently reports that civility is essential to a functioning democracy. Yet incivility is (and historically has been) prevalent in political contexts. Why this contradiction? This presentation will highlight approaches to incivility from the political communication field, then discuss relevant findings from over a decade of research focused on U.S. public opinion about political incivility. The talk will touch on the following questions: What behaviors do members of the U.S. public perceive as uncivil? How does politicians’ use of incivility affect potential voters? And how does mediated incivility (dis)engage the public? The presentation will conclude with reflections on the implications of these findings for U.S. democracy as the country enters a second Trump presidency. And somehow Missouri manages to keep passing minimum wage propositions, and this time with required sick leave!
