As if on cue, the other conscripts crouched down and pinned me in place, on all fours at Maarenen's feet. He leaned over me. I felt a hand reach down into the back of my pants. He pressed a finger against my hole. I rounded my back and cried out. He hit me with his free hand and told me to shut up and keep licking. He kept pushing with his finger. It was bone dry. The pain was sharp, like stabbing or ripping. I could not relax to let it inside. Once he was one knuckle deep, I could not tense up to keep him out. He asked if it was hurting me. I told him yes. He asked if I was enjoying it. I sobbed. I whimpered "no." The conscript did not laugh at me as I might have expected, or openly doubted my honesty. They remained silent as Maarenen made a final attempt to work his finger another inch inside me. He withdrew his hand. I was made to kneel upright, my head level with his hips. He cupped my chin in his hand and made me look up at him. He said that I was not trying my best. He said I was being lazy. He said that the squad needed more from me. I said I understood. He said I did not, yet, and told me to open my mouth. He put his finger inside. I could taste nothing but metal. He told me that I must pass the next task put before me with flying colors. He told me I could ask him for help, but under no circumstances was I to fail. With the hand that was not in my mouth, he pointed to a wooden-handled broom. He told me that should I fail, I would have a broom insderted into my rear, and the conscripts would lower me down onto it until I could taste it. This would put me in the infirmary, and most likely kill me outright, but at least then my squad might be given a slob with more drive and more loyalty to his betters. I must have been crying quite severely at that point, for Maarenen stroked my cheek and cooed at me. He took from his pocket a foil wrapper, and from inside the wrapper he broke off a small piece of chocolate which he placed in my mouth. I do not remember if I could taste it, though I know it was the kind with raisins, which I quite like under normal circumstances. Maarenen fixed me in his pale blue gaze and told me he could be kind to me. He told me that if I showed them some grit, they could show me some tenderness. I remember thanking the private in a very small voice. The conscripts left the closet. I do not remember following them

On the seventh or eighth day I was made to remove the old laces from all the boots in the ten-man squad. I was given new laces to replace them only after turning the old ones in to the corporal. Nine minutes into re-lacing the boots, I was made to stop and to go and clean out the gutters on the roof instead. Upon returning to the barracks, I discovered that every conscript whose boots I had not finished lacing--six of the ten--had been made to do the day's training with untied, laceless boots and had suffered for it. They did not take this well. This time there was no simple beating. I was pulled into a supply closet near the stairwell. The six upset members of the squad were there. One of them, a man called Maaranen, had been formally designated as the team leader. Maaranen was older than the other conscripts by two years, having failed to secure a third annual deferrment. He had blond hair, bulging blue eyes, a strong jaw, an athletic build, and the easy confidence of a boy with a two-year head start on all of his peers. I suspect he was in the minority of conscripts who had already lost his virginity. When he cornered me in that closet, he did not scream at me. He pointed to his boots, which were battered and dirty. He told me I needed to apologize to them. I looked down at the boots and said I was very sorry. The conscripts frowned and shook their heads. No, Maaranen said, that would not do. I had to get down on my hands and knees and apologize to them down there. I did as I was told and, fearful of being kicked hard in the face, apologized to the boots again. That was better, he said, but I should really work to undo the damage I had caused. He said I should clean them with my tongue. I licked the toe of his boot. I could feel the grit and dirt collect on my tongue. The leather seemed to suck all moisture directly from my mouth. He bade me to continue. Though my lips and tongue quickly blackened from polish and dirt, it made little difference to the appearance of the boot. As I licked, he told me that our whole squad was very concerned with my behaviour. He told me that if a slob was a sufficient burden, it would benefit the conscripts if that slob was replaced.
