Just broke on CNBC: A White House official confirms to me the new tariff against China this term now totals **145%**, not 125% as the President said yesterday.

The EO spells out the “reciprocal” rate jumped from 84% to 125% overnight. Combined with the 20% fentanyl tariff, we’re at 145%.

Trump is vowing an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods, effective Wednesday, if Beijing follows through with its announced retaliation.

That would bring the total tariff rate applied to Chinese goods to **104%** so far this term, a White House official confirms to me.

Asked about the stock market and whether the White House can rule out a recession, White House press sec Karoline Leavitt calls the stock market “a snapshot of a moment in time” and repeats Trump’s phrasing that “we are in a period of economic transition.”

Tariff call schedule, as of now:

- Mexico's Sheinbaum says she expects to talk with Trump this week, likely Thursday
- Canada's Trudeau says he assumes he'll talk with Trump in days to come
- I asked Trump yesterday if he'd spoken with China's Xi, and he replied: "I don't want to tell you that."

Trump just signed an order on reciprocal tariffs that, by my read, appears far more expansive than expected

The White House is not just matching other countries' tariff rates. They're planning customized, country-specific tariffs based on other countries' tariff rates PLUS four other criteria

The White House tells us the Feb. 1 date for Canada and Mexico tariffs is "still on the books."

But Howard Lutnick says in his confirmation hearing for Commerce secretary today that if CA/MX act swiftly to shut their borders and stop the flow of fentanyl, "there will be no tariff."

As we await Trump’s pick for a USTR (or for him to clarify that it’s Lutnick).. Thinking about how long before he ever ran for president, Trump once pledged to appoint himself USTR if he ever made it to the White House politi.co/2DLXwmx
