"Verna’s heart is beating more rapidly. If he recognizes me spontaneously, I won’t kill him, she thinks. If I tell him who I am and he recognizes me and then apologizes, I still won’t kill him. That’s two more escape chances than he gave her." #BSUENG490

I noticed how Esme's tone immediately switched up after Donna revealed her abortion, that one moment changed their entire conversation, made everything significantly tenser despite how kind and generous Esme was only moments before. She was still helpful, but a wall was raised #BSUENG490

"Silence about violence is violence." (260)
We forget that invisible forms of violence that do not leave marks on our skin are still violence. Complicity with the violent system to preserve your own personal comfort may keep you safe in the moment, but it won't always. #BSUENG490

I love the turn towards the end of Snake. It immediately upends the story's realism in an especially satisfying way and I really love the sword dancer's role towards the end of the story. Everything the man despises comes back to bite him for his crimes. Awesome. #BSUENG490

Audre Lorde's writing on poetry as a revolutionary form is really important to me. I remember reading it a long time ago and it's informed a lot of my motivation towards writing poetry and I love what she has to say about it. #BSUENG490

One of my favorite parts about this book is how natural non-human characters are. They're integrated incredibly easily and naturally, and I feel like a lot of Sci-Fi struggles with that. This book proves that it doesn't have to be that hard. #BSUENG490

Interesting that Frank gets mad at Cassie for getting emotionally involved in the case and yet he's getting pretty invested himself! #bsueng490

#bsueng490 "no pasts" seems like a very hard rule to keep, especially considering that the characters are literally living in a place made of the past. I think it's inevitable that this rule will cause problems at some point and it will not end well

The idea that feminism has already won its goal and that any work towards it now is overbearing (and conversely that any work against it is now revolutionary) is something I've always felt but struggled to have to words for. So frustrating!!! #bsueng490

I didn't expect the book to turn/end like this but I think it's really interesting + makes sense. I wish more time was put towards exploring Ada's nonbinary identity as we don't really get to see that until the near end. I think rereading this would be interesting #bsueng490

It's interesting to watch the obanje care more and more about The Ada as the book goes along. I've noticed that it stops referring to her as The Ada and as just Ada. #BSUENG490

This book is kind of confusing so far, but I'm excited to read more to see if it starts to make sense. Or maybe it won't, it's interesting anyways :) #bsueng490

On one hand I felt that the ending was a bit cliche but on the other hand oh my god I'm glad it went that way I was so scared for Anna #bsueng490

Anna's actions can be seen as a form of unconscious(?) protest. As I read further in the book, I realized her reaction to her circumstances was pretty reasonable for a child her age and it only makes the story more heart-wrenching.

I've been reading and writing a lot of magical realism lately so part of me hopes that she really doesn't have to eat but omg what if she does #BSUENG490

“All their ‘wars are merry, and all their songs are sad,” ... alongside and underneath the facile expression of sadness runs an idiom that knows about the experience
of pain, and about living through and overcoming it rather than wallowing in it."

"if she knew all along who I was

but wouldn’t speak to me out of sheer malice

or if that single, sudden sentence

was like a whale leaping and launching itself out
over the ocean." #BSUENG490

It is impossible to define a feminine practice of writing ... for this practice can never be theorized, enclosed, coded — which doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. But it will always surpass the
discourse that regulates the phallocentric system. #BSUENG490

The bars on the windows of the children's room symbolizes the protagonist's own "soft" prison.
