I don't do a ton of full inner monologue, but I like to describe how characters physically feel to hint as to their emotional state. Particularly with more repressed characters, I think it helps show how they're doing

If Aymeric was frustrated, he didn’t look it. He might have been a military man, but he was a politician at his core. It was why Kiah’a preferred to keep him at arm’s length. “I know that our relationship has been strained. I wished to reassure you, to the best of mine ability, that you have naught to fear. You are an honored—” “Ally of Ishgard?” Kiah’a snorted. It tugged at his chest and he winced as pain shot up his spine. Aymeric started to stand, a hand outstretched. He froze halfway, clearly realizing that Kiah’a didn’t want him touching him but too far gone to sit down without making it worse. Kiah’a barrelled ahead. “I saved the city because it was the right thing to do. Not for honor or renown. If you came here to thank me, don’t. I neither wish for it nor need it. Now I am missing an arm, so unless you can reattach it in working order, I do not want anything from you.” It was the most that Kiah’a had said since the fight. His entire body ached, like an itch that he couldn’t scratch. His lungs strained like he had run through Ul’dah at the height of the afternoon’s heat. Aymeric remained standing next to the bed. He didn’t put a hand on Kiah’a, but his eyebrows were furrowed in concern. “Pray, do not exhaust yourself. I shall call for Charlene—” “ No, ” Kiah’a insisted. He clenched his jaw, which was a mistake. Something stretched and another flash of pain danced behind his eyes. He yelped, jerking his stump back. His shoulder burned. He thought that missing an arm would mean less pain, but he had quickly learned how wrong he was. “Fucking Menphina’s tits.” “You need succor. Charlene, or perhaps another—” “Shut up and sit down or leave,” Kiah’a ordered, voice hard as stone. Aymeric sat down.

G'raha laughed at something Rammbroes said and Kiah'a scowled. "You would think that was funny." The mood around the campfire plummeted. Kiah'a stared at the fire as it crackled. It was warm against his face. He could convinced himself that it was the only reason his face felt warm. "Kiah'a, have I done something to offend you?" G'raha asked. His tail flicked back and forth. Rammbroes shifted a little in his seat, but said nothing. "Beyond your little game with the aethersand?" Kiah'a retorted. He tore his eyes from the fire to regard G'raha. His ears were pressed back against his head, which only made Kiah'a's temper hotter. What was he playing at, being anxious? "You would not understand how I felt if I wrote you an entire book." Rammbroes mumbled something about getting more firewood. He stood and wandered off as the two Miqo'te stared at one another. Finally, after too long, G'raha sighed. His shoulders slumped. "I may not understand your mind, but you do not know me either, Kiah'a." G'raha stood. "I'm going to assist Rammbroes." As he walked off, Kiah'a hunched in on himself. He pressed two fingers to the side of his neck and closed his eyes. His pulse was strong and wild, and he willed it to calm. He hated feeling like this.

Ngl I'm still proud of this fic where Fafnir turns into a kid again. It's got a lot of silly moments and also I managed to slip in some angst, because I couldn't help myself, but I promise it's very funny.

Fafnir could feel themself waking. It was a slow rise, the type where every sense came at its own time and not a moment sooner. Their hearing was first. The soft rumble of voices down a distant hall reverberated in Fafnir's horns. The creak of floorboards under heavy footsteps slid underneath the door. They could feel the bedsheets underneath their fingers. It was damp. They must have had a nightmare. Unsurprising. They couldn't remember. Surprising. It smelled musty. The Forgotten Knight always smelled musty. It was too cold for mold but not cleaned often enough to avoid a dank scent that lingered in the wood. Fafnir swallowed. They wished to go back to sleep, but they could feel how dry their mouth was, how sore their throat felt. Further slumber would be elusive, they feared. "Good morning, my dear," Haurchefant murmured. Fafnir's eyes shot open. They looked to their side. No one was there. They were alone. Haurchefant was gone. Haurchefant was gone.

For his dislike of physical contact most of the time, Kiah'a also craves touch. He likes things he can hold onto and ground himself. Sidurgu met Kiah'a when he was very distressed, to say the least, and it really didn't get better. Peace was rare. The Exarch was very stoic and kingly so Sidurgu likes seeing G'raha relaxed and emotional. G'raha considers Kiah'a laughs to be the most beautiful sound in the world. And Sidurgu's eyes are so bright and captivating, but also feel like they cut past any of G'raha's bullshit.

Fafnir is autistic! They don't emote much and speak very rarely, so people see them as cold and aloof.

They embrace it as a way to keep others away, as they were bullied for being different as a child. It's very hard for them to connect with others, even the Scions, and they feel intense pressure+

I hc the Keepers of the Moon as very indigenous/native, so Kiah'a is indigenous coded as well.

Fafnir is East Asian because they're from Doma. I write them with a lot of Chinese influence specifically because that's my heritage.
