I found a good deal on a laptop for a family member, but it had a numeric keypad.

Huge mistake. I spent a week mistyping characters to the right, and now that I'm back in my work machine, I'm typing everything shifted left.

I'm sure there is a way to start a process in Linux `screen` that forks children, and have it shut down cleanly when the screen session is killed, but all my experiments have failed.

A clear sign that a software tool is not well documented or well understood: All the help forums have multiple answers like "that didn't work for me but this <slightly different incantation> did."
