Giving visas is not a figure of merit of any concrete good. It's a facilitation of brain drain. These visas are granted to well-to-do people from third world who can afford to have good education and aspire to go abroad. This is not a charity for the underprivileged from the periphery.

Yes, I agree. I just want to say that because of this very reason the progressive conservativism regarding the established contemporary academia is misplaced.

It does this out of necessity. The cheap supply of brain power from peripheral world is the crucial cannon fodder to survive in the game. I work in materials science and it's very rare to find trustworthy, reproducible research papers. It is very common to cherry picks scientific observations.

How egalitarian and progressive is academia? Let's evaluate that from how it treats the researchers and students without tenure, how it implements publish or perish policy, and how it sidelines scientific rigour over publishability.
