Point being, the investors are definitely entitled to complain about not seeing a return on their investment. It's a nice sentiment that what the team was trying to do is difficult, but I fail to see how the blame doesn't lie on them for failing to reach the goalpoasts they set for themselves.

It seems incendiary to tell these people, who are generally not software developers themselves, essentially that they "should've known better" and done their research about software scalability before deciding to back the project. If that were a reality, the project wouldn't have made a dime.

This seems like a stretch to me. The backers signed onto specific promises and timelines, which weren't delivered. Whether or not these promises were realistic is irrelevant to the investor-- the entities involved at the time decided that is what they would deliver, and they did not.
