It is shocking that in countries where electron microscopy and EDS are available, #asbestos analysis of air samples using PCM/light microscopy is still permitted. Thin and long fibers pose the greatest health risk, and most (like this 50nm x 3µm chrysotile) are far below the resolution limit of PCM.

Window #putty is an often underestimated hotspot for #asbestos. #Chrysotile was sometimes added to #window-putty in large quantities to accelerate curing and increase strength. As the asbestos is added manually, the distribution is often uneven, which should be considered when #sampling.

The variation in the size of asbestos fibres is remarkable - it is surprising that PCM (and PLM) is still used for the analysis of air samples instead of electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy with EDS is, in our view, the only truly reliable method. doi.org/10.1080/1545...
