Agreed. This is not the look of mutual affection. It’s the look one gives you after missing an important deadline yet again.

Keep asking the hard questions. We still need hard journalism Don’t be lured by access as so many seem to have done just to have a front row seat to the 3 ring circus. You’ll just be sprayed by the clowns and walk away smelling of dung.

This would go for all presidential pardons. I know it’s a right that presidents have but we should understand it and make sure the people we vote in use this right in a way that aligns with our values.

I actually would like a full database of all pardons showing what they were convicted of, time served, type of pardon (preemptive, commutation, etc), connection to the administration if any, and post pardon convictions if any.

I’m not sure if it’s better or worse than what I saw the other night

What I know is the U.S. system is complicated and hard and can discourage people from seeking care early and getting proper care. It can cause financial disaster for families who are already experiencing stress from illness and injury. Other nations have it figured out. Why can’t Americans? x/

So when I hear people say they’re happy with US healthcare. They like their care (minus mental health, women’s and minority care but that’s a whole other thread) but they don’t like their insurance but they don’t want to lose it because it’s all they know. 18/

So nothing else comes out of our checks like Medicare, social security, etc.. In WY I took home 64.92% of my paycheck. Here I take home 65.25%. It’s not that different, for me. If you choose the lowest tier insurance for a single person and don’t invest in your 401k, it will be very different. 17/

I lived in Wyoming before moving to Australia which is pretty tax friendly. I opted for a good insurance program for myself and my kids. I was also able to invest 10% into my 401k (make up for poor choices in my youth). Here they tax health insurance and companies fully pay 11% into the pensions 16/

But what about taxes???? I still have taxes withheld from my paycheck for these services and get them returned at the end of the year since I’m an expat. I’m an engineer so I look at things like this when making decisions. I can only speak for my personal experience. 15/

People can still opt to get private insurance to supplement. This often helps with dental care, vision, hospital services and some extras. These services are included in the public scheme for those under 18. I’m no expert though. 14/

I can walk in to any chemist any where and fill my prescription. I haven’t experienced wait times at all but I haven’t had to have anything out of the ordinary. I did have a run of bad luck when I arrived and had 3 root canals and was able to walk in to a dentist to start the process. 13/

As an expat I have to pay for health insurance but since all of health care is part of their federal health scheme, there is no price negotiation, no in network out of network, no HMOs. I come in and pay for my service. The meds I’m on are far cheaper than what I paid in the U.S. 12/

This is leading up to where I am now. I now live as an expat in Australia and experience their health care. 11/

So sure that’s urgent care and what about everything else that insurance pays for? I can tell you stories of all the out of pocket expenses that insurance doesn’t cover from routine procedures to meds to all of it. 10/

I was paying more for the privilege of using insurance. And I was paying the insurance company. 9/
December 30, 2024 at 9:51 PM
I did that because I couldn’t even get a doctors appointment with my regular doctor without insurance. Even if I wanted to pay cash. We ended up in urgent care and got handed a bill but they had our old insurance on it so I asked them to remove it. The bill was half that to pay cash. 8/

Then there was the time we weren’t covered. I paid for cobra as long as it was available and wasn’t eligible for the ACA. So you just hope you don’t get sick. You stockpile meds by taking them every other day, then half doses every other day. 7/

I used to be able to go to the doctor and get what I need. Then I noticed they stopped covering my meds. Then I noticed billing got worse. Things I thought were covered weren’t. More time fighting. 6/

I’ve had “good” insurance all of my life. I’m a woman with a chronic disease. I also have 2 kids who deserve good insurance and I’m lucky my employers have mostly offered it. I’ve lived all over the U.S. and have had all the big names. Over the years things have just gotten harder 5/
