I always did that because it's basically always in my hands (or under the seat, as it were). But that means I don't have to worry about them being mishandled or damaged. Everything in the checked bag is soft and hard to break =p

I take it as a carry-on (inside its custom bag) every time, no matter what is in the build. The ones with electronics in them often get separately screened.
