The nice thing is there are many ways for writing to be good! Read a lot of authors, analyse what you like/hate. Pratchett's acerbic whimsy, Solzhenitsyn's grimy reality, Eddings' classic fantasy, Dumas' venal nobles, [author here]... Think about their diction, plot lines, pacing, all that.

My baseline is good grammar and convention, which is like the writing equivalent of being able to draw a straight line.
