Did you ever find out? If it's SG I am tempted to say the Sorling hut, given the coastal position, elephant seals and mountains, but the shape of the roof is different in this photo I took in 2015.

Not bad, but not as gripping as S4C

A time for good decisions.

Taking a moment upwind to first calmly think through our optimal escape route away from a polar bear and her cub raiding nests in the distance. #fieldphotofriday #fieldworkfriday

Solid tally of beasts over the last few months in the field. Plus 3 Arctic foxes and too many reindeer & geese to count. Not all biodiversity is microbial, just most of it. @aberdlsagb.bsky.social

Personally I wouldn’t think that’s for the best. This 500 kilo fella would concur.

Coming to a coastline near you soon.

😆 Not that time, but here is another example of that from the opposite end of the planet. Bear in mind at my last Antarctic medical I was measured at 194cm in the z axis…

I’ve always loved digging, but these 3m deep, rock hard snow pits in Antarctica in 2020 tested that love. #fieldworkfriday #fieldphotofriday

From the small biased sample of my timeline here this afternoon, I conclude that using AI is more likely to be accepted so long as you are an established academic writing a paper and not a student submitting an assignment. Feels a bit questionable. (www.nature.com/articles/d41...)

Honoured to announce today that I have been elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (FLSW) as a result of my contribution to polar microbiology and the Welsh response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m thankful for the support of @aberuni.bsky.social @aberdlsagb.bsky.social from Fresher to FLSW!

NCBI is down since at least 20 hours ago, time to revert to alternative means.

People watching people watching polar bears* is always intriguing.

Close up of sleeping bear via Svalbardposten.

So the curtain falls on what is likely to be my last Svalbard winter season for the foreseeable.

With it comes the deep sense of privilege and responsibility that stems from studying this magical, fragile, critical place at a time of profound ecological and geopolitical change.

Correlation and causation, revisited.

It’s February. It’s the High Arctic. The North pole is just 1200km away.

And oddly enough for this profession I am not someone who likes being cold.

But it’s practically shirtsleeves weather.
