Hey people. Im trying to limit social media these days between finishing up my thesis on Bohra women on Instagram, teaching Intro to Islam for the first time, parenting and just living somewhat normally but still want to keep in touch with all the amaze academic friends online so here I am!
I used to love the Religious Studies digest on the previous bird app and wondering why they stopped updating it since December. It had some good alt-ac jobs as well.

Hi bluesky academics who are also MESA members. Anyone interested in joining a roundtable on the topic of mohabbat(love) as an epistemological framework? We need atleast one more person! DM if it intrigues you.

I finally understand why people say write the introduction of your thesis last. My theoretical frame finally makes sense to me which is a relief because here I was staring at my thesis thinking what have I done?

Academic job market experienced friends - how long should I hold onto hope for a job post? If you dont get any replies a month after app deadline? Im already very low on it but since most dont bother to let people know they arent interested I would like to stop hoping.

The thing about having kids and life responsibilities and chores is that you have to break up the thesis writing even if you dont want to. At times when the ideas are flowing and I just want to keep on, I cant, and its so frustrating. Where my fellow phd parents at?

I need a place to regurgitate all the thoughts in my mind as I navigate parenting two boys (one of whom did a disgusting thing yesterday that I cant even talk about involving bodily fluids), last stages of thesis writing and pessimistic doom-applying to jobs, and this account is going to be it.

Something new and insane in the academic job application process. "Add Optional Multi Media" - like what does that mean? The only thing that funnily enough comes to mind is Elle Woods video app to Harvard Law.
But the question is why? Why in the first round? Also why?

I went first time to the AAR last year and really enjoyed meeting online academic friends and making new connections. This year being on the job market I would love to go again. But total lack of funding for late stage PhDs means I cannot justify attending esp since I didnt get a paper accepted.

academics are amazing because each of them, in getting a phd, wrote an entire book that nobody will ever read (their dissertation). you would think that would lead to total ego death but let me tell you buddy

Would you give a student a chance to do an assignment that was the first one in the semester which they say they didnt understand at the time and did not bother emailing or asking at that point? Ive been very accomodating but this feels like a stretch.

I recently reviewed Michael O'Sullivan's book "No Birds of Passage" for Reading Religion which is really insightful on three minority Muslim communities in South Asia inc my own.
Didnt share it on the bird app as no engagement but here it is for anyone interested!

Love going down research rabbit holes as I put together lectures esp if it has to do with visual media. Students in my classes are often subjected to these side quests. #academicproblems

It’s here, a *start* of an Islamic Studies Starter Pack. Please spread the word. This is a work in progress… Scholars of Islam in all regions and periods, let me know, and I’ll happily add you.
