‘Vida Taquería’

Photographing people makes me uncomfortable. Not a skill I have in my wheelhouse. Point. Click. Get Away. Don’t stop to think about composition, lighting, or anything else. Sometimes, that is the best approach for an overthinker.

There are many times when I miss living in Dallas or Houston (the museums and galleries, the international food scene), but nothing compares to the RGV when the orange trees are in bloom.

Part of the analog photography class is to produce a portfolio of 12 images in a theme. Still life and old buildings are my front runners so far.

When you’re a student at 59 yo and you’ve always been a school geek, then you spend your Spring Break doing photography homework.

Staircase at the Manuel Guerra residence & store in the City of Roma, TX. The city is making an effort to preserve the building as well as make it usable for a modern tenant.

I discovered the work of Florence Henri (1893-1982) when gathering photography still life images for inspiration. This is my 1st try at digesting her aesthetic. #utrgvartstudent #utrgvphotographyclass #bwphoto #stilllifephotography

The maxim my photography professor gave us is to “expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights”. To this end, we use ISO 400 film at an ISO 200 camera setting and aim to bracket on the overexposure side. Field work this morning was in fog. Below are iPhone visualizations of the photos.

These are the fist set of prints from my analog photography class at UTRGV. These are working prints (ie no burning, no dodging, single exposure time, #2 density filter). Later in class we will do a fine art print.

Sundays are for homework. Actually as a 59 year old art student, it seems everyday is for homework just to keep up. I am very much enjoying it all, but then again, I’ve always been a school geek. #utrgvartstudent #utrgvdrawingclass

Everyone has something to teach you if you are open. During studio a fellow student came by to look at my drawing. ‘If you use a brush on the egg to knock back the lines a little bit and leave the lemon as is, you will have a smooth texture on the egg and a rough one on the lemon.’ Sage advice.
