We just like our diacritics and diagraphs... and diagraphs with diacritics. 😄 So 'Łódź' does not equal 'Lodz'. Seriously though, Polish spelling might look weird and counter intuitive for English speakers, but far more consistent than English.

The detail about Polish 'Blue Police' in Łódź is proplexig. This formation was supposed to operate ony in the General Government, while Łódź (renamed as Litzmannstadt) ended up in the territories incorporated into the Reich - Reichsgau Wartheland to be precise.
