IIRC problem with Whitmer wasn't just going there, it was standing there while Trump signed a bunch of EOs targeting political opponents.

Maybe it wasn't her fault that it happened that way, but if you're going to go there, IMO you have to make sure you don't become a prop like that.

He thinks that the press should be subordinate ... so Saudi Arabia.

I don't get the politics of this. I would support a law saying that anyone caught text while driving gets their license suspended ... as a person who drives ... for the obvious reasons.

My problem isn't people saying "Genocide Joe", it's when many of the same people are silent about Trump, and when prompted minimize things he does, that if Biden or Obama did them would be proof that they're bloodthirsty warmongers.

I'm sure it will be 20 minutes of "Madanu, why do you hate Jews"

But also I'm sure Mamdani has prepared for that.

The media is saving the "it's a crisis" takes for when a Dem president takes over and starts arresting the people responsible.
November 21, 2025 at 3:28 PM
Dems lost the white vote by 15 points in 2024, and the popular vote by 1.5. If they win the white vote by 4, that's a 19 point swing, if the same held for nonwhite voters, would mean winning the popular vote 17.5

The number of districts with a PVI of R+17 or lower is ... 384.

Not saying they'd all be urbanists if apartments were a little bigger, but it might change the numbers a little. If YIMBYism rules the day, it won't just be more apartments but bigger ones that appeal to more people.

It's late and I'm tired and not even sure what everyone's arguing about anymore, but I will just point out that "larger" is relative. Whether a person would prefer the "larger" home depends on how much larger, which is (in part) a function of housing costs.
November 20, 2025 at 5:54 AM
From what I understand "5000 sq ft plot, 2500 sq ft home" is also illegal in many places. Looking at the Phoenix zoning districts, many areas allow 5, 3, or even 1 unit per acre (5000 sq foot lot means 8.7 per acre).

Most people aren't going to want a totally car-free lifestyle. But you can build a lot denser if households have 1 instead of 2.

And the level of mass transit & walkable amenities needed to make that sustainable is way lower than what you have in Manhattan.
November 19, 2025 at 1:46 AM
From what I've seen most YIMBYs do, in fact, recognize that denser suburbs is the key component. Missing middle, shitting on Nassau County, etc.

Since "owning a car vs not" is still a big dichotomy, what I'd emphasize is places where you need one car per household, vs needing one car per driver.
November 19, 2025 at 1:44 AM
More broadly ... my understanding is that even my suburban, car-centric childhood neighborhood is too dense for land use rules in many places.
November 19, 2025 at 1:32 AM
Seems to me like it's not just urban multifamily living that's in high demand, but urban multifamily living with a solid level of walkability/mass transit and a good economy.

There's some circularity, people don't want the condo because it's "not enough space", which is really (partly) about cost.
November 19, 2025 at 1:32 AM
I am against the saying "we don't want two states, we want all of it".

That phrase, just with a different "we", is also the consensus view of everyone in the Republican party, most of the political spectrum in Israel, and every person who's accused Mamdani (who doesn't say it) of being extreme.

I remember at the time, I thought the reason Rs rejected her wasn't being unqualified, it was because they didn't trust a girl to overturn Roe. So they replaced her with a Concerned Alumni of Princeton.

Trump wouldn't do this for the Court because Rs actually care about it, unlike e.g. SecDef.
