A comic page featuring Kakuzu, Juusan, and a bounty they just finished hunting. The comic is set in the Founders’ Era of Naruto, after the two had fled Takigakure. They stand in a mountainous region, in between two rock formations. Panel 1: Kakuzu kneels down to pick up the prized body, checking his bounty’s face is still intact. Juusan eyes Kakuzu while she tidies her dusty red cloak. Panel 2: A close up shot of Kakuzu picking up the body by its collar. Panel 3: From over Juusan’s shoulder, we continue to watch Kakuzu’s motions with her. He stands. Panel 4: A close up shot of the bounty’s blank face. “Why is it you value money so?” She asks. Panel 5: Kakuzu narrows his eyes at her while she continues to probe him, asking, “What value could it possibly bring an austere man to earn such devotion?” Panel 6: A wide shot of the two, Juusan facing directly towards him, and Kakuzu only remains half-turned towards her, his bounty hanging by his collar over Kakuzu’s back. Juusan comments, “I don’t believe the desire to hoard a grand fortune is within your character.” Kakuzu takes a moment before answering. “You’re quite presumptuous, aren’t you…” He shoots back. “I can only presume until I hear an answer.” She says. Page two, a continuation of the previous comic page. Panel 1: In an overhead shot of the two, they continue their back and forth. “And why must that be your concern?” Kakuzu asks pointedly. “I prefer the term ‘curiosity.’” Juusan corrects. Panel 2: A close up of Kakuzu’s glaring eye staring down at his companion. Panel 3: A mid shot showing both of them closer to Juusan’s eye level, the proverbial camera of the audience just behind her shoulder. She listens intently at Kakuzu’s answer. “…in this world, the only thing you can depend on is money.” He begins with an almost bored drone of his deep voice. “Loyalty and skill? Meaningless in the face of money. You, yourself, witnessed how I was cast out as soon as I was seen as a liability.” His tone rises with his anger, recalling that bitter feeling of betrayal. Panel 4: It’s framing is a reverse of the previous panel. Now we see from Kakuzu’s point of view as he turns the questions into Juusan. “And what of your doctrine?” “My…doctrine?” Juusan raises an eyebrow at him. “It’s only fair that I ask as well.” Panel 5: A bright spotlight shines over Juusan as Kakuzu holds out a hand to her as if waiting for a physical manifestation of her answer. “If my faith lies in the coin, where do you pledge your fealty?” Panel 6: We see an extreme closeup of her eyes. She’s staring down in though, considering her words. Panel 7: Her eyes train upward, but beyond the height at which Kakuzu towers over her. It’s as if she stares into the heavens.

Juusan (& Haruka)! A shinobi from Hashirama’s era, able to revive from death. She defects from her clan and later Takigakure, her initial refuge, due to the dehumanization she suffered. To her death is a mercy in this world, for it is cruel to be forced to survive in a society run by war. #narutooc
