What I understand is that provenance research helps preserve cultural heritage by documenting the history and movement of artworks. It ensures artifacts are in the rightful hands for the eyes of the public.

The digitalization of provenance records has made it easier to trace and verify an artwork’s history. Especially because of social media, numerous instituious such as the Chicago Institute of art are facing backlash as to how they have acquired certain pieces.

Furthermore, the provenance of an artwork tells a story of its journey through time. Each owner, exhibition, and location adds to the narrative, often involving disputes and lawsuits; especially when its a museum peice.

Something I found interesting through the lecture I attended is that an artwork with a well-documented provenance often has higher value.
