“All the misogyny before this was fine! But now you’re saying divorce is bad?! Jail for a thousand years!”

One benefit is someone I used to know who was a closet Trumper the last time around responded to this, in shock at the misogyny - in addition to being kind of amusing, I know realize I still have her on IG.

I keep getting shit like this - what exactly about my online presence tells the algorithm “Renee wants this.” 895 replies!

Oh for sure. But a lot of the rage bait doesn’t even bother with a narrative over there. It’s such a shitshow - start to finish.

Oh come on, that’s not true. There’s also a shit ton of rage bait.

And of course, you can do shit all by yourself. You can tell your friends that you’re gonna be a de facto drop off point for hygiene items for the homeless, and take those to shelters/foodbanks once a week, or take water and clean socks around, etc

if your community is lacking an existing organization to do work you think is important for your community that’s a whole different animal. If you find yourself in that space you really need to look for folks with experience doing these things because it is A LOT more complex than you think

Show up, give what you can, and try to get to know your community better. No matter how involved you already are, there’s more people to meet and things to understand.

Think on your strengths. Maybe you do the most good at a foodbank or homeless shelter, but maybe you make a difference in spaces that are meant to be a comfort (isolation and fear aren’t good for anyone). Almost every community organization is dying for more volunteers.

Again- find existing organizations. You accomplish much more by giving your time to an organization that knows your community and how to navigate things like the grants that are getting more difficult to get than you will by reinventing the wheel.

4) If you have TIME - donate it. Local communities have so much more power to protect t/ppl in them than you realize. Make your community a place that is safe, protective, & fulfilling for people affected by these policies.

3) If you have MONEY - donate it. If there’s a direct need in your community and a trustworthy organization doing work - you can start there. If you’re concerned about larger issues, look for existing organizations with a history you can confirm. For example: ACLU, NARAL, RAICES, & many more!

2) CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES. Make a list of issues and make 1 phone call about each 1- they record t/# of people call about each issue - don’t just say “Push back!” Tell them what you’re concerned about. Ex: “I want to know what’s being done about the EO to freeze federal hiring.”

1) GTFO SM trying to convince you that showing your beliefs put you at risk. If you are a member of a group that’s actually at risk - you knew that already. If you’re a white, cis, citizen - don’t hide. If we start going underground at the first sign of opposition that’s surrender.

The only reason FB has kept a stranglehold on me is all the friends I made through the writing world. Hopefully I get the hang of Bluesky and get to keep you all.
