The 1919 hardcover edition of "Warlord of Mars" by McClurg was J. Allen St. John's first John Carter cover. Between 1918 and the 1940s, he would paint numerous covers and render many interior line drawings for ERB's Martian stories in pulp magazines and hardcovers alike.

In 1971, Doubleday commissioned Frank Frazetta to paint a cover for a combined volume featuring "Gods of Mars" and "Warlord of Mars," ERB's third Martian novel originally published in 1913/1914. This masterpiece depicts John Carter and Tars Tarkas fighting the four-armed apes of Barsoom.

With their single eye and mouth-bearing hands, the plant men of Mars inspired many artists who drew "Gods of Mars," including Joe Orlando's cover for DC's Weird Worlds #3 (1972), which featured comic adaptations of several ERB stories.

Gino D'Achille's cover for the Ballantine paperback edition of "A Princess of Mars" (1977) was less voluptuous and sensual than Frazetta's or Whelan's, but he captured the bleakness of Barsoom and sinewy strength of the Tharks.

I grew up reading the Del Rey paperbacks of ERB's Martian Tales with evocative covers by the great Michael Whelan. His rendering of "A Princess from Mars" (1985) remains a favorite of mine.
