"When one in three Native American women will be raped in their lifetimes, that is an assault on our national conscience; it is an affront to our shared humanity; it is something that we cannot allow to continue (July 29, 2010, Barack Obama).

Remember the acronym TALK. K for Keep supporting. A victim doesn't "just get over" an assault. It's never forgotten and can take years, a lifetime to heal. Be there for those in your life.

Listen to sexual assault victims without judgment.

Be present with them by giving them your attention and use supportive phrases that don't assess blame or how they should be feeling.

Talking with someone about assault can be hard. Remember the acronym TALK. A is for asking how you can help. A victim of assault might not know what they need, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't ask. You don't have to have the answers.

Remember the acronym TALK. T for thanking them for telling you.

Sexual assault causes physical injury, but it isn't always noticeable or life-threatening. It doesn't mean the victim didn't fight back or the assault was "not that bad." Some victims experience tonic mobility.

Just listen and be supportive.

Arrest is the least likely outcome for a perpetrator of a sexual assault crime. Therefore, there is much incentive to report it when there is very little chance for any sort of justice and a very high chance of reliving the trauma and enduring victim-blaming.

False reporting of rape is very rare, only between 2-8% which is the same for other felonies. Victims don't report for many reasons.

Believe survivors. It's as simple as that.
