The Hedgehog cactus blooms for just a few hours on a summer night under a bright moon. I snapped this profile shot in the pre-dawn light. It wilted soon after.

The Hedgehog cactus flower opens on a summer night when the moon is bright. Blooming for just a few hours, these cacti rely on night pollinators like bats and moths. They attract them with a fragrance and its beastly size. This blossom was fully open and at least 10 inches across. I snapped a profile shot in the flat pre-dawn light. By the time the sun rose it will be closed and was wilting, soon to be eaten by ravens, deer, or javalina. The fruit inside the flower will be carried away, thus propagating that cactus’s genetic heritage.
