Poster for "Vibrational Architectures. Experiments on Sonic Spaces" This workshop explores sonic spaces and vibrational architectures through a transdisciplinary approach to sound, listening, and spatial experiences. Together, we will navigate invisible architectures and immaterial worlds—sonic structures that shape our shared environment, relational dynamics, and perceptions or reality. By probing these resonant fields, we explore acoustic phenomena through artistic and theoretical frameworks and hands-on-experimentation. Guided by the poetics and politics of listening, as well as the creation of experimental apparatus for sending and receiving vibrations, the workshop will approaching sound and vibration as strong material forces for constructing sonic spaces and other forms of vibrational architectures.

"Cavalcade, a new film by the Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective, zooms in on a gathering where humans and non-humans jostle for space. A congregation of figures emanate from dreams, myths, and speculations, posing the question of what it might mean to extend human solidarity to forms of animal, mythic, and machinic sentience. Moving through forests, climbing the upthrust of petrified lava, flying over brick kilns and dry riverbeds, observing ships at sea, and walking with a procession of devotees celebrating the nuptials of the Indic deities Shiva and Parvati, Cavalcade expands our understanding of what it means to be cosmopolitan. The video is accompanied by three works in print that incorporate AI responses to the artists’ prompts, a welcome intrusion of proto-sentience into the cosmos of the show. "

YveYANG Gallery presents "your golf course made my GPU", a show of new artwork by Sam Ghantous that engages with issues currently seizing headlines across the world. These glittering objects mine subjects as diverse as video games, global logistics, and renaissance paintings, dredging our contemporary moment to reincorporate its material substrate. At the core of the show is a three-channel video that weaves together industrial footage with advertisements for luxury hotels in the imperfectly buffering reality built by today's technology. Ghantous churns through references like the trawlers scooping the ocean floor in his film. "Tiger Woods cuts through pulverized digital promises," synthetic narrators intone over footage of the fallen hero, trapped in the dunes at the Augusta National Golf Club. His plight is contrasted with the planet’s unstoppable momentum. The film is paired with two-dimensional works that, like the film, seek to reunite circuits with their geological lineage. These UV prints on silicon wafers resemble giant microchips, cut with mutant reimaginings of art history.

This semester at the Media Lounge we are hosting Nicole L’Huillier (artist and member of our Chair 💕). She is presenting an artwork in collaboration with Patricia Dominguez @patrixdominguez and another in collaboration with Daniela Catrileo @cerquitadelasnubes You are all welcome to the Media Lounge to encounter the artworks as well as some of Nicole’s bibliographical references and reading notes from The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction by Ursula k. Le Guin. “The work of Nicole L’Huillier reveals a state of awareness in which each sound possesses its own intelligence. For her, sound is an entanglement of relationships, which is why listening is a crucial sense—one that can even refine vision. Conceiving the surface of listening practices as a membrane, Nicole’s work creates paths that lead to unexpected encounters. ​ In the Media Lounge, two videos are presented: Leche Holográfica (Holographic Milk, 2021), created in collaboration with Patricia Domínguez, and Naves “Nampülwangulenfe / Mapunauta” (Vessels, 2021), in collaboration with Daniela Catrileo. The first video meditates on the symbolic force of milk in the Digital Kingdom, where it emerges as a vital element that nourishes both spirituality and quantum reality. The work invites us to rethink our own human scale in relation to space and time.”

The social, historical and cultural dimensions of the skin in Brazilian art and literature. No one can get out of their skin. This popular saying expresses the fact that each person has a skin. Each skin is therefore unique. It is a non-transferable document. Acting as a record, it details aspects of an individual and a collective memory. Each skin possesses a sensitivity that touches and it is touched by the world. It mediates temperature fluctuations, and is marked by cuts, accidents, and its own history. Skin marks us in the world, giving us the outline of individuals. "Invented skins" is the result of a research process in art and literature that considers the social dimension of texts and images throughout cultural memory. How it has a materiality when it appears in images, is narrated or scanned, but also in its quality of image, appearance, and the textures that are formed from its property as tissue and organ. This book shows that skin is a biological reality that occupies a physical and psychic space, but also unfolds in the imagination. A skin is something artists and writers have to invent from the fact that each person has a skin and is capable of making one. In the history of humanity the idea of skin came from a later paradigm of race. So far, race has had a solid relation with history, establishing categorical hierarchies whose purpose was to accumulate wealth and establish a point of view free from the notion of race itself. It is as if race were debatable from the most diverse categories of non-white people, from outside the hierarchical scale. Before getting into inventing skins, it is necessary to recognise two distinct processes that are part of its context. Eduardo Jorge de Oliveira (born 1978 in Fortaleza, Brazil) is an assistant professor of literature, art and media at the University of Zurich and a member of the Latin America Center Zurich and the Center for Arts and Cultural Theory.

UNMASKING SPACE X RICHARD GERALD-RONDÓN & MAGDALENA PICAZZO — A PROTEST CITY: AUGMENTED SPACES FOR INSURGENT CITIZENSHIP with architect Magdalena Picazzo and spatial researcher Richard Gerald-Rondón, co-founders of LATINAA, the student-led platform at the AA, London. This week’s session explores the slippage of the modern city into liquid, rebel imaginaries, whose political ground evolved into a spatial practice of occupation, communication and reclaiming. Drawing on the concept of the ‚augmented city‘, where material and mediated geographies converge, we will explore how protesters navigate, transform and narrate the extreme environment of protest through hybrid mechanisms of diffusion and organisation. @richardgerald.r @magdalenapicazzo — Unmasking Space sessions are open and public.
