Freelance illustrator in traditional media - pencils, watercolor etc. Eery beasts and creatures are my favourite. Love Disco Elysium and dogs.
Bostons on my mind.
Oh, sweet beasts, I wish you endless sun spots to sunbathe. You know no evil.

I held my breath, trying to contour the shadows correctly. Uff.

Your uncle's cat is not OK.

Quick color and shadow/light study. I added the creature.

Imagine, you just came in to get a coffee to-go, and on your way outside, you gotta step over this.
Would you? Or would you call cops?
They hate it when you bother them over these things, though... you just hope the creature won't mind.

Watercolor+pencil sketch.

Getting a better feel for this creature. I am getting a slight moomins-like vibe, which I can only appreciate.

Feeing blue?
Moping?
It's just a natural state of things.

New beast came out today.
She's very mopey.

I never managed to create a fictitious world, but I think it's one of the best things in art/illustration. Maybe with time all my beasts might exist somewhere. It's a good long-term project to have.

An experiment with toned paper with watercolor. Idea was that areas I left lighter would already have a tone, and just a light wash of color would create a fresh, non-overworked look.

Papers' texture was not worth the effort, I had to get back to my old paper midway.

I put so much effort into colors, but sometimes it can be helpful to convert a sketch or a finished piece into black and white. Check if the values work without colors.

I would have made it more varied if I were to paint in black and white, but it's not bad at all!

The next step to proper illustration is thinking about what to depict and what sort of experience or mood it brings to the viewer.

I will continue honing my skills in chosen media, but what I also need to do..critically.. is to learn to tell a story with my picture.

A Bill Murrays.

A portrait study assignment for my online illustration course. Out of 5 portraits, made in different media, these ones are the least bad. I quite like the technique, as for the resemblance...it's fine. It's an elusive face.

Continuing with more loose, less precise painting.

I really liked how it started out, but adding some level of detail sometimes ruins it for me. The monkey, too, it's not his fault, though.

Wellp, not every day is a blessing, but I never regret trying.

After a pause due to being busy, painting felt fresh again. I decided not to focus on details and precision too much, and it landed a more relaxed and stylised look. Great!

Time to start deciding what sort of elements I'd like to have within this fictitious world.

The complexity and occasional need to emphasize lighter details is bringing me to consider goache in the future.

It's often hard not to overwork some areas, too. I like the table still life at least.

Nostalgia.

I thought painting a simple old-game screenshot would be easy—wrong! Capturing its nuance and specific awkwardness is impossible. Probably better for gouache or acrylics.

I will try to render some more just to lose some time I suppose.

A beast on a stairway.

I still cheat with some linework. It's not simple to work with areas on a small format, as watercolor flows and pools into neighboring areas. Next time, I will use masking gum, hope it helps the character to stand out against the background.

For my appointment I have to get...really close...to Bill Murray. And this was our first date.

Face more mysterious than Mona Lisa. Nothing animates emotion the way I am used to. This face is full of paradoxes.

Let's see how we do tomorrow.

Not every day is a step forward. Not all results are worth showing, but I spent time and effort on those and perhaps someone else sees in them something good.

Continuing with putting a crature in environments. With some consulting and reference I hope the light is at least passable, as in if the beast were in that situation, the light could fall something like that.

Once again a big fan of the greens!

Back to simple shapes and light. I love how blue shadows and yellow light make white walls look green—something we rarely notice, the brain interpres it as depth.

I wonder if this effect can be achieved without a pencil underdrawing. Start with big solid areas first?

First steps in placing a beast into an environment. Since I lack experience with full scenes and light direction, I cheated using linework to separate the character.

With more experience and foreplanning, I’ll eventually blend characters seamlessly into scenes.

Fun daily challenge from @drinkanddrawberlin.bsky.social - movie stills.
Since I am still on a watercolor quest, that's the medium.

Nacho Libre. It was tough to choose, since every frame is ready to be a painting.

Oranges and turquoises/blues are complementary colors, naturally working well together.

Although tempted to get in all or most of the details, with painting it is really your authorial choise. I held back quite a lot and it works better.

More loose sketches of dogs, with another - a minpin. I can't speak for all of them, but mine is the most loyal and needy guy. The combination of visible pencil and light watercolor is super nice for sketches.

Historical inspiration for a doberman, did you know that?

With utmost tipidation I am trying to address light in my art. It is definitely more fun to have color in sketches.

Can't imagine what one can do if one is capable of depicting at least somewhat believable lightning. The possibilities!

I often choose references unsuited for watercolor and the result can be lachluster.

But yesterday, I painted a scene, and depicting its environment went better than ever before.

So I tell myself - it's always better to paint than not to paint.
