It’s only a dead end if the teacher/professor isn’t skillful at guiding students in its responsible and ethical use.

As a professor I have designed image-creation, writing and even research assignments that both allow and require students to use AI tools, but in a responsible accountable way that blends their own critical thinking skills with the automation. It’s not that hard, and the students appreciate it.
