I have been saying this…one major innovation (in power/energy) would make power so much cheaper and simultaneously make trillions of dollars of investments worthless overnight. The real money maker is in conquering one of the bottlenecks and selling the solution to others.

I think that they should start calling things like they see them and they should say, You're not coming to our cities, you're not coming to our towns with the military, you're not going to turn this country into a dictatorship. We're not going to let you gerrymander Texas and take over the House unfairly. We want democratic representation in this country. And you do see Democrats in the state of Texas fighting. They're fighting their governor's efforts to change the way that the people of Texas are represented in the U.S. House. And I think that that is really inspiring to people. So it actually, I think, doesn't take much to find a way to communicate through social media and through the platform that all politicians have to really stand up and say, This is about Trump trying to consolidate power. We remember January 6. We remember when he lied about the election. He's lied about the integrity of American democracy for years. We're not going to let him continue to do that. I think there's still time and I think people would rally behind it. And it would put pressure on Trump, I think. Sargent: 1 agree. And the idea that there's still time is really critical. You can say we should make our community safer, but what Trump is doing is not that. Or you can say we do need to deal with immigration, but we need to create a legal pathway for people who were brought here as children without being able to do anything about it because they were too young to make a decision. But what Trump wants to do is break families apart and send people to foreign prisons and do something that [America] doesn't do, which is close its doors to people who want to work hard. You can make your own case and people may follow you. People may agree with you because when you dig down into the polling, people don't think that families should be ripped apart and they don't think that people should be sent to foreign prisons without being taken in front of a judge. And they don't think that tanks should be rolling through American streets. And so there's a way to frame issues and to attack what Trump is doing without risking alienating the public because public opinion is more nuanced than people give it credit for-and certainly more nuanced than people might know just by looking at the top lines from polling. Sargent: Right. There's another point to be made here too. I think that Miller is banking on this idea that non-white working-class people will automatically be with Trump on this. The game is he's appealing to this idea—a lot of pundits push this as well-that elite white liberals are out of touch with working-class minorities. And that's the fuel of Trumpism, right? But there's a lot of hubris here, I think. Trumpists think that because they made some inroads with those communities in 2024 that they can basically scream crime and they'll get those same voters to mindlessly be all for consolidating authoritarian power and dear leader Trump. But the election was about the cost of living, and Trump's win was incredibly narrow. There's a panicky tone to Miller there.

What this subtext leaves out is agency. Cartman in the show's world didn't cause the death of wokeness or even wish for it. He's one hundred percent innocent (much more so than the character is in many storylines). He wanted to laugh at NPR's sad African lesbians, he'd never dreamed of canceling them! At no point does the show hint that the excesses of the anti-wokeness crowd or their years of work conflating criticism and cultural change with censorship could ever have contributed to this new era of outright government censorship and repression. There's a sense of sorrow, but no hint of responsibility. Of all of the cultural products of anti-wokeness, South Park is so far the first to have treated the free-speech absolutism they once espoused as a principle worth standing by in the Trump era. Maybe that should be enough. But I can't stop thinking that they're the ones who did this! They made wokeness into the culture's greatest bogeyman. They demonized minorities asking for equal treatment, pooh-poohed social change, perpetuated lies, and coddled a growing reactionary movement who, despite its violence and its open Nazis, were never taken seriously. The widespread belief that NPR lesbians and trans women in sports were a greater hazard than Nazis and extremist Christians was the most catastrophic failure of conventional wisdom in my lifetime. I'm glad South Park is willing to risk cancellation to tell the truth about this Trumpist world we're stuck with, but I can't resist the urge to say: You assholes caused this.

Considering that, in just 2023, South Park rallied the anti-woke comedy crowd with the Paramount+ streaming special Joining the Panderverse, this dramatic shift in targets is bound to be unpopular with the show's sizable right-wing popular if it continues throughout Season 27. However, Cartman's assessment of the cultural climate is undoubtedly correct — when the executive branch of our government is systematically scrubbing the achievements of people of color from our history books and firing them en masse from government positions, it's hard to pretend that punching down on marginalized people like Cartman loves to do is exactly boundary-pushing. Unfortunately for Cartman, being an unrepentant neo-Nazi is the new norm in the American government - and electric vehicles don't emit lethal fumes.
