I love dark shit and whump and all that. I'm trying to learn how to do fandom again. 18+, no minors please.
I had such dishonorable designs on him as a young creature.

Oh no, was it unmemorable? I still have it on my list.

I wanna scream I love him from the top of my lungs... but I'm afraid that someone else will hear me.

TADC is not super popular and both of those character designs and concepts are too abstract to be threatening to the average viewer. I genuinely couldn't even tell you what TADC is about or the axis of queerness.

Now I actually want to watch Andor.

I agree, but I also think you don't have to feed the trolls and haters. You genuinely got it made (Amazon Prime! Some of the best animation and music this side of the solar system! A fanbase that truly loves your work!) and these people (and social media) aren't worth your time.

The hatred pushed on transgressive (yes, HB/HH is transgressive) queer creators is a feature of the rise of puritanism, not a bug. They're fighting the war on fascism on the side of fascism, even if it's smaller scale.
August 25, 2025 at 10:09 AM
Extremely good point! I also wish HB and Hazbin had come out in 2004 or so, lol. It would have caught much, much less unnecessary flak. But I adore it now, fuck the zeitgeist and all that.
August 25, 2025 at 12:34 AM
Sometimes I was just thinking about is how HB+HH lean into a mid-00's emo alt art style, and I wonder if the fact every generation tries to differentiate from the one prior by loudly denouncing everything associated with it plays a role. It's "cringe" because it's so millennial?
August 25, 2025 at 12:11 AM
Gender conforming, desexualized, moralistic. But also, I think a lot of them just haven't unpacked their learned homophobia and nstead just repackaged it in progressive-sounding rhetoric.
August 24, 2025 at 10:56 PM
Oh, I don't doubt it does. It's just not, as you said, the target audience. And yes, god. I wish. I don't think a lot of the queer fans crusading for their strange puritan ideal even realize they're trying to appease an imaginary bigoted audience.

Especially when that desire is built on desiring vulnerability, any semblance of effeminacy, and/or submissiveness. The flip side is also true -- women are taught that to desire instead of seeking to BE desired is forbidden.
August 24, 2025 at 10:37 PM
❤️ Lmao, I made a Bluesky just so I could get into all of this.
August 24, 2025 at 10:28 PM
And I think P&S also benefited from 1) not being threatening to the hegemonic, heterosexual status quo, 2) anime, where fans excuse racism with more racism ("the Japanese don't know better!"), and 3) coming out when the internet climate wasn't what's it's like today.
August 24, 2025 at 10:27 PM
Good call. I think it's mainly that it doesn't draw a queer fandom audience -- and queer fandom is currently embroiled in self-policing and respectability politics which is... often an unfortunate response within marginalized groups when there's a rise in external pressures (fascism).
August 24, 2025 at 10:25 PM
Sure, but I don't see people making hour-long videos about how liking P&S makes you a bad person and you need to self-flagellate fifty lashes and say the Hail Mary twenty times

"Angst and suffering beyond what's necessary" is my bread and butter. Thank you for giving me this good food. ❤️
August 24, 2025 at 10:15 PM
Very true. But I would say it goes even deeper -- there's an instilled terror of being desired in men and they can only make their peace with it if its within the context of being wanted for their power, dominance, their ability to enact THEIR desire on others, and resources/money.
August 24, 2025 at 10:14 PM
It was like they couldn't even commit. But it's definitely not threatening to the status quo.
August 24, 2025 at 10:11 PM
Garterbelt was a bizarre racist caricature for a lot of the early episodes, but nobody cares about that lol
August 24, 2025 at 10:07 PM
I will not lie, I am SO hyped for the angel brothers lmao
August 24, 2025 at 10:06 PM
Quick addendum: despite the axis being heterosexual, the women who enjoy the more atypical male characters like Stolas or Angel Dust are also threatening to the status quo. Women who desire men who are vulnerable, effeminate, and sexualized for these aspects? It genuinely upsets people.
August 24, 2025 at 10:05 PM
You're kidding yourself if you think whatever goes on with the Demon sisters is still not catered to a heterosexual gaze (men who wank to girl-on-girl action).
