Reflecting on an amazing @aps-dbio.bsky.social APS DBIO program at the APS Global Physics Summit two weeks ago. As DBIO program chair, it was gratifying to see an excellent set of ~ 80 sessions in biological physics come to life. I’m honored and excited to serve as the Chair of APS DBIO this year!

There were calls for scientists to make more effort to communicate our research, its impact on knowledge creation and society, to enhance the public’s understanding. The mood was subdued and yet upbeat with many young smiling faces. We have to hope that the future is brighter. #StandUpForScience 🧪

A lot of people & energy at the #StandUpForScience protest. Inspiring speeches from leaders, students, scientists, raising voices to protest against federal firings, funding freezes, budget cuts, which will have devastating & lasting effects on research, health care, education, careers & society. 🧪

They’ve invested in this journey to discover basic truths, find cures for diseases, create knowledge and advance science. If not stopped, these actions will destroy labs and institutions. The loss will be irreparable, impact society at each level. Heartbreaking to hear stories from those affected.

Photos from the rally last week to support science, protest firings at NIH, NSF & budget cuts for research. Careers of people who’ve worked hard for science & public service have been lost. There were many young people, including PhD students from my lab, who’re anxious about what the future holds.🧪

Photos from our day at the Hill to advocate for the science budget and policies. Recent orders have created turmoil with grants paused and panels cancelled, potentially cutting thousands of grants and crippling research. Hoping these will be fought and reversed. #APSCVD2025

Good to visit congressional offices this week as a member of APS @apsphysics.bsky.social (chair-elect of APS DBIO), to advocate for science funding, enhancing STEM workforce and many issues. Hope it has some impact in these disturbing times. Read the APS policy priorities: cvd.aps.org. #APSCVD2025
