Rediscovered a striking phrase in Leopold's Sand County Almanac: 'skill in the exercise of bias' (in him choosing which tree to fell). This resonates well with our daily grind as conservation biologists, developing the skills for selective decision-making; choosing which species to fell or let live.

These rankings have their flaws, but it's wonderful to see Ecology at the University of Zurich holding a top spot. Ecology is even the university's highest-ranking subject!

Our research and teaching programs in ecology are clearly doing a great job. 🥳

Higher mortality is not a universal cost of dispersal: doi.org/10.1086/726220

Our 32-year study of African wild dogs shows that dispersing individuals actually face lower mortality compared to residents. Time to rethink some of the long-held assumptions on cost of dispersal.
