Everyday photos I took in and around Oakland’s Jingletown district as it gentrified around me during the fifteen years (2001 - 2016) I lived there. All photos mine unless noted; older photos will generally be posted first.
Another one of the recycling plant, March 2003, this time from the Alameda shoreline, showing its proximity to the Estuary.

The Fruitvale Bridge spanning Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda, 2003. (Quoting Wikipedia) "The Fruitvale Bridge is a vertical-lift Warren through truss moveable railroad bridge"; it's very much a part of Jingletown's skyline.

The recycling plant, March 2003. Not really in Jingletown, it definitely help define its skyline, though, being visually omnipresent in places.

MV Ensenada (BC), Oakland Estuary, February 2003. Coast Guard Island in the background with several cutters moored there, and downtown Oakland in the right background.

Another view of the old TS Golden Bear training ship (a.k.a. "The Artship") at the Ninth Avenue pier, Oakland, December 2002.

The old Store-Ur-Self (yes!) warehouse right next to Interstate 880 in Jingletown (January, 2003). Later converted to very expensive lifestyle lofts ("The Cotton Mill Studios").

The forest of cranes… floating cranes at the foot of Livingston Street, Jingletown(ish), 2002.

The Estuary and the old MV Golden Bear, up towards Ninth Street, 2002. The Golden Bear was supposed to become The Artship, but that fell through; I don't know what happened to it after that.

Two industrial Jingletown icons in one photo: the ConAgra grain elevator and the Redy Mix concrete plant, The Embarcadero, 2002.

More Straus Carpets surrealism (2002). Straus used to have walls and (movable) billboards done with wonderfully surreal things like this; they always brightened up the neighborhood for me.

Looking southeast from Park Street Bridge, 2002 — the (now long-gone) old tin sheds to the left, the Fruitvale Bridges in the middle distance, the recycling plant wedged (visually) between the two, and Alameda on the right.

The Cemex plant, 23rd Avenue, Jingletown (with a bit of the ConAgra grain elevator poking through on the left); 2002.

The edge of the Estuary… some Jingletown landmarks, including the Cemex and Redy-Mix concrete plants, the boat yard, the ConAgra silos, and the Coast Guard HQ as seen from Park Street Bridge (2002).

After the rain (2002). Typical bit of Estuary-side vacant land back then… there was a lot of vacant land around back then, some of it badly contaminated.

Sunset… another shot of the ConAgra grain elevator from around 2002, this time from across the Estuary in Alameda.

The old sheds on Glascock Street, Jingletown, still in use when I took the photo (2002). Later expensively re-architected…

The Redy-Mix concrete plant, Kennedy and Embarcadero, 2002. Another constant in Jingletown life back then was the two busy concrete plants squashed into the neighborhood — and the endless stream of concrete trucks coming and going at all hours.

A wintry sunset at the ConAgra grain elevator. One of the icons of Jingletown, this is a building that'll feature endlessly here over the years (sorry!). This one's taken from the Embarcadero, around 2001 I think.

Jingletown's old tin sheds on the banks of Oakland Estuary, 2002(ish). These were torn down for the inevitable cheap-looking condos soon after; the artists and craftspeople, etc., who lived in the sheds were booted out (of course).

SHOWROOM (2003) — one of the deliciously surreal bits of the Straus Carpets place on Ford, before the fire that took out much of the block in 2006 (Straus rebuilt and is still going).
