Given their tolerance of people like this in their ‘protests’ they either know or don’t care.

As so many of these protesters have said in the past, “if there’s a Nazi at a table and ten people talking with him, there are eleven Nazis”

Given current state of British royalty…don’t blame him for not wanting to be dragooned into that world

A favorite school memory: history textbook claimed the US won (!) the Vietnam War. Being the little sh*t that I am, I brought in a photo of the last chopper out and asked if that was what winning looked like…

Point is, make him that kid but also be ready to bail him from the principal’s office!

FRG: but you would only use this in retaliation right?
France: uh, yeah, other than the warning shot.
FRG: the what?
France: *force de frappe noises*

…and the position is listed as internal only. By the same person who said the former. Make it make sense

I think we do a bad job articulating why fundamentals still matter. To use another post on this thread as an example…we have calculators at the ready everywhere we go. But if a student doesn’t learn basic arithmetic, they will never develop the sense for when an output is clearly wrong…

Yep. Summer “boot camps” pre-freshman year, timely mid-semester interventions by academic advising staff, dedicated first-gen support programs all can help, but it’s really a band-aid for the shitshow that is K-12.

The politics of the provosts office forcing the change to a weaker standard would be a funny example of the follies of appearance-driven decision making if it wasn’t for the countless students’ lives that are ruined by being set up to fail…
August 20, 2023 at 7:06 PM
What makes it even worse is that it differentially hurts underrepresented groups, who are more likely to have had spotty K-12 instruction. A few universities have dedicated “catch up” programs (Howard is well known for this); otherwise the “failed handoff” is a leading factor in STEM URM rates

It’s a no win position. Either enforce entry standards rigorously and require remedial courses, reducing enrollment and 4-yr grad rates; or spend time reviewing fundamentals in core curriculum, stealing class time from actual KLEs; or just accept higher fail rates.
August 20, 2023 at 7:01 PM
Yes. A university I am familiar with has seen a steady slide in math placement test scores. Worried about the dropping 4-year grad rate (because lower math entry level > prereqs > can’t finish in 4) they switched to an easier version a few years ago. Scores spiked, but so did ENG/PHYS 101 fail rate…
