All the “overuse” and “overreach” is coming from Right-Wing propagandists trying to confuse you, so that you don’t notice how you’re supporting oppressors of marginalized groups. It’s so easy for them to make you freak out over trans people, so you don’t notice the loss of your 1st amendment rights.

No it hasn't. The Right tried to distort it into a perversion because they hate compassion itself, and have to misrepresent that word to hide their bigoted intolerance.

The country I grew up in believed that everyone had a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Somehow that got perverted into an oppressive nation of forced conformity through bigotry.

If language is defined by usage, then the people who invented this term still use it correctly, as an awareness of and concern for social inequality; while Right-wingers lie about that and everything else, trying to pretend a false dichotomy, as if everyone not in the far Right is on the far Left.
