The introduction of austerity was set up by Labour. Brown's light touch regulation of the City enabled the GFC. Blair & Brown signed the UK up to the Stability and Growth Pact which constrained government spending. We just got Tory austerity instead of Labour's.

If it went to court they could certainly try arguing that, but since it is understood practice that the OBR budget report is only released once the chancellor has finished speaking, whether they could convince a magistrate remains open to question.

Ultimately it would be for the courts to decide but the fact they had to guess the URL, however easy it was, because it wasn't directly linked wouldn't help their case.

In 2005 Daniel Cuthbert was convicted of "hacking" a website for merely adding ../../../ to the end of a web address.

In the relevant legislation (the Computer Misuse Act 1990) the key factor is whether the individual knew that they didn't have authorisation to access the information.

b. the access he intends to secure is unauthorised; and

c. he knows at the time when he causes the computer to perform the function that that is the case.

You may think that. I may think that. But the law doesn't agree. I refer you to the Computer Misuse Act 1990

Section (1)

(1) A person is guilty of an offence if –

a. he causes a computer to perform any function with intent to secure access to any program or data held in any computer;

Brings to mind the conviction of Daniel Cuthbert for "hacking" a charity website in 2005. He attempted some minor directory traversal by typing ../../../ into the address bar.

Dispite what Greg Dyke said at the time he was fired by the Board of Governors. He did offer to resign but withdrew that offer. He then demanded his job back. This came to light three years later after a FOI request. The meeting minutes are publicly available.

Emblematic of this is that Greg Dyke publicly announced he had resigned (which was technically true I guess) after he had tendered his resignation and then withdrawn it. He was then fired by the board. This came to light three years later after a FOI request. Tom Clark seems unaware of this.

This, of course, is not how banks make money. In general banks do not lend out their reserves as loans. When they lend to a customer they just credit the account by the appropriate amount, in effect creating money. A banks lending is not constrained by the deposits it holds.

You'd think, but what if the lesson translates more precisely to "don't borrow money in a currency you don't control"? It's a lesson that every country that's joined the Euro has chosen to ignore.

They probably read 'The Business' and thought 'amateurs, you don't need to buy a principality to own a country, you can just pay to make someone a king'.

Although Dyke did offer to resign he withdrew that offer and was instead sacked by the governors. After which he unsuccessfully demanded his job back.

There's also the notion that Brody commits a sin by allowing himself to be cajoled into going along with what he knows is a lie and is responsible (symbolically at least) for the subsequent shark attacks. He is figuratively speaking the final guy.

Eventually they'll throw out something to dismiss it like the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic or Zimbabwe and retreat back to the old neoliberal model.
September 3, 2025 at 9:18 PM
This is pure speculation but I think it's part of a model that's so deeply imbeded in people's psyches that it feels natural like the orientation of a map where north is up. So even though you can get them to agree on specific points that don't match the model they're not comfortable with it.
