Well very little of what I wrote at that time saw the light of day...
Me and my mates were always comparing our tracks to fully mastered tracks so we always thought we were playing catch up with the latest production level, it always seemed to be moving so fast.

For me, it was Drum and Bass, mostly Ram Trilogy/Keaton. Then later slower stuff, a lot of early Ninja Tune and Orbital were big influences.

I think the Line-in port is both Optical and normal 3.5mm jack - so if you have a mic that can connect with a 3.5mm jack or an adapter, that's probably the easiest solution.
I have an optical cable in a large bag in the attic but its not been used for 20 years.
