Shortly after the cease and desist, Pin the Mustache on Hall & Oates was featured on Buzzfeed! Too bad Michele couldn't sell them anymore. But that’s the thing about fan art. It wasn't valuable because of her work alone. It was valuable because of the work of Hall & Oates.

Shortly after the cease and desist, Pin the Mustache on Hall & Oates was featured on Buzzfeed! Too bad Michele couldn't sell them anymore. But that’s the thing about fan art. It wasn't valuable because of her work alone. It was valuable because of the work of Hall & Oates.
Yet there’s always a legal risk to playing in someone else’s sandbox, even if you think it's fair use. If you rely on fan art for your business, and can't afford a lawyer to defend your right to do so, a cease and desist may be all it takes to bring your business to a sudden close.
