Male kestrel in the neighborhood

For years and years, I'd see a kestrel greeting us from atop a short pine tree nearly every day from late fall until late winter. Like this one. According to birdfact.com, "The male American kestrel is an attractive and colorful falcon with slate-blue wings and head, vertical stripes on the cheeks, chestnut brown feathers on the back, a pale chestnut brown breast and stomach, and a brown tail with black and white stripes at its base." Given its gorgeous blue wings, I'm going to assert that this beautiful bird, looking at us over its left shoulder, is male. After a long drought killed many of the shortest trees in the neighborhood, I did not see any kestrels for several years. But this year, KESTRELS!!!! They do make me happy every time I see them.

After bouncing between several coffee shops, which were tasty but far to loud and crowded for my liking, I FOUND THE LIBRARY! And it's quiet and there are very few people here and there are lovely comfortable spaces to work!!

Oh for the days when my dog and I would visit with the kestrel. We thought we'd see it (we thought it was the same one every day, the dog and I did) every time we wandered onto our loop. It was glorious. Curious about us and not afraid of us, stared right at us both, even the gigantic, stinky canine who accompanied me on our visits. This is how it looked: A vision in rust and grey-blue. With a clear yellow eye and striking black markings slashing its white face. Beautiful rust and black tail. Dashing blue-grey wings. A vision.
