not me finding my thinkpad t420 again and instantly remembering how much of a utilitarian brick it was, and loving it for the same reasons

Anyone know if 3M 200MP tape has the capability to rip paint off breeze-block walls? Forums seem inconclusive

the music I was listening to just now had this somewhat out-of-place bass note that had the *exact same frequency* as my phone's vibration motor, so I freaked out thinking I was getting an incoming call at 8:30pm...

Anything interesting I can do with a 24-port 10/100 PoE switch? I've been offered one as part of an office cleanout.

For ref, I have two spare switches - a HP 2510G-24 without any PoE and a Juniper EX3200 with 8 PoE ports.
I'm currently using a HP 2910al-48-PoE so it wouldn't be an upgrade lol

Word of advice: reminiscing about things at 5am is probably not a good idea

I recently discovered that a local bowling alley replaced their 1990s Brunswick scoring systems, this means that I no longer know of a single bowling alley in the UK which uses Frameworx

I'm guessing they replaced the pinsetters too, but I didn't get a good look when I went in recently. Shame!

follow-up on this: it's still been a great laptop BUT:
it hard crashes a fair bit, around twice a day if I'm unlucky. this is a known issue on the 7040 series boards. however, I've got no regrets, it's got an amazing keyboard, I just wish it had physical touchpad buttons.
my thinkpad p50's display cable conveniently gave up right as I went on holiday recently :(
over the past year, i've had to replace the:
- mainboard (charging ic died i think? cuts out when plugged in)
- display
- keyboard
- wlan card
- battery TWICE

i decided it was time to order a framework 🎉

oh yeah! I got a 1992 ibm model m - 1391406, it's wonderful to type on! I broke one of the space bar's stabiliser tracks during cleaning, but electrical tape seems to have solved that problem.

after like what, 2 years, and countless saves, I've finally surpassed 100 hours in satisfactory!
maybe one day I'll get past the second space elevator phase. maybe.

i don't know how past me got to this point, but i just switched from:
a vps i was paying about $11/year for with >100ms latency and a 1tb bandwidth limit, to
a vps i pay $0 for with <5ms latency and no bandwidth limit, which i forgot about for nearly 3 years

i don't think i've used my desktop for anything other than playing a couple games at this point. it's scary nearly having the performance of my giant power-hungry desktop in a thin-and-light that sips current. (can you tell i haven't had a modern laptop for a long time?)

if you don't like the little crumb bits you get when you're finishing off a box of cereal, just throw it all into a sieve, that alone is usually very effective at getting the majority of them out

framework arrived today (13", 7640u). after using it for a few hours i genuinely think i don't need my desktop computer for anything anymore bar graphically and computationally expensive games

perhaps i was just using really old/underpowered laptops before? this laptop is incredible

need motivation to just nuke my failing 20tb storage array instead of trying to save all of it (i barely look through 99% of it but some of this data is as old as me)

2021 me: let's make every single full backup a squashfs archive to save space!
2024 me: painstakingly unsquashfs'ing my many backups so I can see what's even in them now that my storage is networked with extremely cursed ACLs

can't believe I have to live with the consequences of my past decisions

wouldn't hurt to look for mutuals I suppose!
my persistent interests:
- selfhosting - things like authentik and jellyfin
- virtualisation involving type1 hypervisors
- hardware modification
- trains, buses
- hard disk drives
there's probably a lot more which I've missed out
