My earliest memories of the game are following Shearer in the classic Newky Brown kit. I too have often maintained that he's the best England 9 of the modern era (Kane up there). He was the prototypical 9 in a 442 era, capable of bullying your big CBs in the air and also stretching lines somewhat.

Very good point. I think the whole "big club discourse" is what works against him. If he Had moved to Barcelona or United as he nearly did, and put up the numbers he consistently had, he'd be lauded similarly to those other EPL greats. Similarly folks overlook his extremely creditable Eng record.
